Training Starts Here. No going back now!

January 17, 2009 by

Well what can we say about today…

I guess a few things.

1) Mike is much fitter than we both thought.

2) I managed much more than I thought I would (I’m still breathing woohooo – just! lol)

3) Running can be rather boring (thank god for MP3s)

4) The money spent on good shoes is well worth it.

5) Deep heat is the spray from the gods.

6) Puddles are no fun to run through (damn the British weather)

So how did we find this out, well Kirsty (another traning partner for us) came out with us and suggested we follow the advice on http://www.coolrunning.com. and start with a brisk 5 min walk to loosen up (happy doing this lol). Next onto a few simple stretches then the running starts.

Again we decided to do this at Sankey Valley Park, this will forever be known as ‘the park of hell’ dun dun duuuuuuun!!!!!! (Mike wrote that lol 😉 )

We started the 20 mins of torture running/jogging for 60 seconds and walking for 90 (its amazing how a minute gets longer the more knackered you are), anyway I managed quite well I think (Mike and Kirsty said it was good but they were being nice). Mike on the other hand managed the full 20 mins! and i think he was quite chuffed with that.

Someone once told me that I will hate running to begin with but if I keep with it then I will learn to love it (yeah right lol), however Mike seems to be enjoying it (freak). No idea how far we ran today but it was deffo an experience.

Roll on the 17th of may…

These Shoes Were Made for Running!

January 16, 2009 by

Ok… after a slight hiccough about whether I was going to be able to run or not I finally got the call to say YES! I was part of it so needed to get myself some decent kit (that wasnt covered in paint!).

After the recommendation from JJ I visited Up and Running and felt like a complete pratt with my jeans rolled up to my knees, running on a treadmill in the middle of a shop in Manchester with people watching!

There I met a lovely lady who discovered through the magic of technology (laptop and video camera) that I ran funny!! In other words pulled my ankles in (Overpronation – if you wanted the posh term! Oooh). So she got out some special trainers (for special people like me), which have built-in supports on the inside and put me back on the treadmill and got me running straight. Maybe this explained why my ankles always hurt after I used to run a while ago.

I also picked up (on my travels this evening) some sports socks, tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt so now I have got all the gear… but no idea!!

Walk Before You Can Run

Sankey Valley Park

Sankey Valley Park

It starts…

In typical British fashion we planned our first route last night 1.6 miles down to Sankey Valley Park and back just to get started and guess what? Yep it started raining, but undeterred we braved the elements! We even had company (Dave and Kirsty from round the corner!).

We wanted to go out for a brisk walk to begin with as we didnt want to overdo it and put ourselves off.

So the walking went well, we kept up a good pace throughout and even managed to jog some short distances and it felt good. On getting home we actually felt pretty refreshed (though it could have been to do with the rain! lol) and we definately slept well!

We have decided we want to try and go out every other night to begin with (weather permitting – a little drizzle is fine, downpour? No thanks!).

The store! Not actually me…

I found out that they do proper analysis of your running there to make sure you get the right trainers to suit your running style / support your foot properly.

So off I walked from work at lunchtime, across town to the Triangle and spoke to a really helpful chap there who sorted my out with some brand new running shoes!

Oddly enough they are the same colour as my car… gotta be a sign! 😛

The plan is to head back over there at the weekend and get Mike some too so that we can start training together properly.

James seemed impressed as he blogged about it himself here – the heat is on!

So…

Tracksuit – check

Trainers – check

Now its onwards with the walking… jogging… running – 10k here we come!

The Beginning

Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet

Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet

Mike and I headed over to Cheshire Oaks today, the retail outlet just off the M56. The idea behind the trip was to get some post Christmas retail therapy in and also try to find a tracksuit that I can wear and feel comfortable in when we are training for this acursed run! Just kidding, it should be fun… right?

I popped into the Adidas shop and found a couple of things that weren’t too expensive and actually didnt look / feel too bad.  So armed with a new blue and white tracksuit I felt just that bit closer to my goal – who was I kidding… but it was a start right?

Next stop some decent trainers!
